Tube End and Mandrel Breakage Detection
Reliable detection of tube blank impacts and mandrel breakage is vital in seamless tube production. FOERSTER eddy current systems act as intelligent sensors that monitor both events in real time – ensuring smooth rolling processes, protecting equipment, and preventing production interruptions.
During seamless tube rolling, tube blanks are pushed and rotated along a steel mandrel bar into the mill. The coupling point between two blanks must be detected precisely to synchronize the process sequence – this is known as tube blank impact detection. An eddy current probe positioned at the rolling unit detects this point accurately and provides the control signal for the next production step.
In contrast, mandrel breakage detection monitors whether the rolling mandrel has snapped off during the process and remains in the tube. Using an encircling coil, the system identifies the magnetic signal change caused by the broken mandrel and immediately stops the machine. FOERSTER testing technology thus combines process monitoring and safety control – ensuring efficient, damage-free production of seamless tubes.
