Billet
Billets are semi-finished metal products with a solid, uniform cross-section—typically square, rectangular, or round—produced through continuous casting or hot forging. They serve as the starting material for subsequent forming processes such as rolling, drawing, or extrusion. Due to their coarse surface scale, high temperatures during production, and varying edge geometries, billets place demanding requirements on non-destructive testing to ensure reliable detection of surface defects before further processing.
Square billets
When inspecting billets with a square or rectangular cross-section, eddy current testing systems often reach their limits, as the edges in particular are only insufficiently covered by the test field.
Round billets
Due to their rough surface structure, billets with a round cross-section require specialized testing systems to ensure reliable detection of surface defects.
